Episode 2: Stolen Vibes
By Thursday morning, Nora was finally starting to breathe easier. MTH 105 no longer felt like rocket science—just aggressive mathematics. She even got a seat beside Yetunde, who whispered lecture notes like secrets. Things were settling in. Until her pen went missing. Again.
She had barely opened her notebook when she realized it was gone. Not in her bag, not in her pocket, not on the bench. She checked three times like it would magically appear.
She sighed. “Not again.”
“Need a pen?” a deep voice beside her said.
But it wasn’t Michael.
It was Ayomide. Confident smile, broad shoulders, a low haircut that looked like he got it done every two days. He was in her department. Always surrounded by laughter, the type of guy who never lacked words or girls.
She hesitated. Then nodded. “Thanks.”
“Keep it,” he said. “You can repay me with lunch.”
She laughed, half serious. “You always this smooth?”
“Only with brilliant girls that pretend to lose pens.”
She rolled her eyes, but the blush gave her away.
From two rows behind, Michael watched quietly. He wasn’t smiling this time.
After class, Nora stepped out, trying to process the sudden Ayomide attention. She turned the corner and almost bumped into Michael.
“Oh! Hey,” she said, suddenly unsure of how to act.
“You losing pens a lot?” he asked, tone unreadable.
“Apparently,” she said, raising the one Ayomide gave her.
Michael looked at it. “That guy—Ayomide—he likes to talk. Be careful.”
Nora squinted. “You know him?”
“Enough to know he doesn’t give things for free.”
She was quiet for a second. Then: “So what about you? You give pens and disappear?”
He looked down at her, expression unreadable. “You want me to stay?”
She opened her mouth. Closed it.
Michael stepped closer and dropped something in her palm—the biro she used two days ago.
“I always return what’s mine,” he said.
Then he turned and walked away again.
Nora stood there, her heart suddenly drumming. This wasn’t even a love triangle yet—but it was already a maze.
And somewhere behind her, Ayomide watched from the hallway.
Smirking.
